Reporting to the Dean of Students, and as a member of the Student Services Leadership Team (SSLT), the Director Career Education provides strategic leadership to both Co-operative Education and Career Services in support of experiential, work integrated learning, graduate and student employment.   This includes strategic planning, development, implementation, and evaluation, as well as operational management, staffing and administration.  He/she works closely with staff and, internal/external stakeholders to evolve career services, cooperative education and to develop new models of work integrated learning.  The Director is responsible for managing career counselling, employment consulting, employer services and cooperative education on all campuses with a strong emphasis on partnering with academic Faculties and other key stakeholders, including (but not limited to) the Centre for Teaching and Learning, Applied Research, the International Department, the Office of the Registrar and Student Services.  He/she leads curriculum development in Career Education, technology enhancements, policy and process development and builds external relationships in the interest of continuous improvement and a best-in-class career education approach.  The incumbent also takes the lead on internships within new degree development and understands and applies requirements/ guidelines as determined by CAFCE, CRA and PEQAB.  The Director provides day-to-day support and mentorship to employees, fostering innovation and productivity as well as excellence in classroom delivery and one-to-one student consulting. He/she builds on the synergy and cohesion of the Career Services and Cooperative Education teams to maximize capacity and impact on students. He/she resolves students’ workplace issues and challenges to policy. In addition, he/she maintains regular communication and idea exchange with key stakeholders and other colleges.  The Director serves as an ambassador of Sheridan to the employer community, industry councils, Boards of Trade and government, forging productive relationships at all levels.           

Responsibilities include:

  • Strategic and operational leadership of  the Career Education portfolio (Career Services and Cooperative Education) with an emphasis on strategic alignment to the University journey and maximizing operational capacity.
  • Developing a culture of evidence and evidence based practices, on-going evaluation to measure effectiveness, impact on student learning, success and ROI
  • Create a process of on-going quality assurance and assessment, that includes feedback from students and all stakeholders
  • Leadership in researching all aspects of the labour market, using a variety of methods, in order to determine best opportunities for work integrated learning, student and graduate employment;
  • Build an effective business plan for all employer outreach and job development efforts
  • Building partnerships with Academic Faculties  to both understand their needs related to Career Education and to build effective experiential and work integrated learning models and appropriate programming for their students;
  • Provides leadership, guidance and direction to staff; Optimizes staff and department performance.
  • Provides leadership in researching all aspects of the labour market, , using a variety of methods, to determine best opportunities for student employment
  • Full responsibility for the development and implementation of the budgets for both the Career Centre and the Co-op office;
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess a Masters degree with specialization in Business, Marketing and/or Industrial Psychology preferred.  The optimal candidate will also have seven years of practical related experience including management experience (or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience).  Experience as an administrator, practitioner or educator in an academic post-secondary institution is a preferred. Competencies will include strategic thinking, team building, change management and facilitation. Proven ability to work collaboratively and build successful partnerships is essential.  The incumbent must be able to build and operationalize a proper business plan with proven budgetary skills.  Also, s/he must have the ability to work at both the strategic an operational (day to day) level simultaneously, multi-task as well as analyse and respond to complex student issues.  Strong leadership and communication (verbal and written) skills are essential as is the ability to analyze and be responsive. Conflict resolution skills, negotiation skills, and project management skills are also required. Knowledge of current software to support the operation of the Co-op and Career Centre is an asset.  The successful candidate must possess a high value for the role of career education, work-integrated learning and the importance of a reflective practice as Sheridan moves towards a world-class teaching university.
