Immediate opening at 50% FTE, with opportunity to transition to 100% full-time.

Overview:

The Internship Coordinator (IC) coordinates internship placements on behalf of academic departments, connects students to placements sites, and is a resource for faculty who supervise internships. This will be achieved by maintaining relationships with existing placement providers and developing relationships with prospective placement providers; developing and administering programming and policies that facilitate entry into and participation in internships by students; and liaising among faculty, employers and students. The IC will strengthen experiential learning experiences for students throughout the curriculum (1) by working with departments that do have internships to increase the proportion of students that participate in internships and/or to increase the quality of the internship placements, and (2) by working with departments that do not have internships to develop and implement relevant internships. The IC will be expected to work effectively as part of the CELC team to achieve broader goals for enhancing experiential learning and developing relationships with employer-partners.

Brief Description of Responsibilities:

  • Planning
    • Estimate enrolment in internship placements; Provide inputs into CELC budget
  • Strategic Planning
    • Make recommendations to CELC Director regarding changes to policies and procedures
  • Student Recruitment
    • Ensure students are aware of benefits of experiential education and internships; Hold information sessions; Assist Admissions with program communications
  • Internship Coordination (Pre-placement)
    • Provide presentations, workshops, and/or individual consultations to assist in searching for placements, development of effective resumes and cover letters, and development of soft skills
    • Ensure that all placements are approved by the department and necessary documentation is in
  • Internship Coordination (Placement Duties)
    • Work with faculty and students to determine student interests and availability and to match students to placements
    • Work with faculty and employers to identify, recruit, and maintain a pool of organizations for internships, field placements, and practicums, and to coordinate job postings on Redeemer’s portal
  • Internship Coordination (Placement Period)
    • Monitor, assess, and evaluate whether students are meeting expectations and learning outcomes
    • Mentor students and serve as a resource for supervisors to help resolve problems/difficulties
    • Communicate regularly with faculty about interaction with supervisors and workplace interaction with students
  • Internship Administration
    • Ensure that all details for a well-run internship are attended to
  • Partner Development and Relationship Management
    • Together with other CELC staff, represent the university at local networking events, and prospect for employers
    • Participate in and/or help organize networking events
    • Interact regularly with partners to build a database of partners and to secure ongoing internship placements that meet their needs
  • Internship Program Development
    • Develop a policy that codifies a common set of institutional expectations; Work with faculty to develop department-specific expectations
    • Work with faculty to develop a vision for the role of internships in a major and identify resources required

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Preferred:

Master of Social Work from an accredited program in Canada or the USA and minimum of 2 years of post-MSW experience in a social work position; Experience in social work field education would be an asset

Minimum:

Bachelors degree plus experience in placement services and/or post-secondary education
Background or experience in one or more of the following disciplines would be an asset: Psychology, Ministry, International Studies, Media and Communications, Health Sciences, Kinesiology
