Director, Experiential Learning
The University of Guelph invites applications for the position of Director, Experiential Learning. Located on the traditional territory of the Attawandaron people, the University is home to 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students studying at three campuses (Guelph, Ridgetown, and the University of Guelph-Humber). With Toronto a short distance to the east, Kitchener-Waterloo to the west, and London to the south, Guelph is an important nexus in the southern Ontario area. The University of Guelph is one of Canada’s leading comprehensive research-intensive postsecondary institutions. It is a leader in knowledge generation and has been transferring technological innovations from the lab to the marketplace for over a century. The institution plays a key role in agricultural, veterinary, engineering, social sciences, humanities, and life sciences research and training, and is well known for its strong focus on student engagement and success.
The Experiential Learning department plays a critical role in fostering student success and employability and supports the institution’s commitment to providing students with opportunities to apply their learning in real-world contexts. The department includes Co-operative Education, Work-Integrated Learning, Workplace Partnerships, Co-curricular Engagement and Learning, and Career Education and Development Services, with these critical programs supported by business operations, systems management, and marketing and communications. The University has the fourth largest co-operative education program in Ontario, with over 3,500 participating students. Thousands more engage in a broad range of co-curricular learning opportunities.
Reporting to the Vice-Provost, Student Affairs and leading a team of close to 40 staff, the Director of Experiential Learning has overall responsibility for enhancing the student experience by delivering high quality programs and services across the experiential education spectrum. The successful candidate will have a record of accomplishment working in student development, transition and retention, and an understanding of the design and delivery of co-operative education. They will have excellent leadership and management skills, and experience and success in mentoring, developing, and supporting a talented staff team. A visionary and strategic leader, the Director of Experiential Learning must thrive in a collaborative and collegial academic culture, have outstanding communications skills, and be deeply committed to student success.
