Position Summary:

We are excited to announce that the University of Waterloo is currently recruiting for a new Director, Employment Relations that is part of our Co-operative Education & Career Action senior management group and reports directly to our Executive Director, Co-operative Education.

The Director, Employment Relations is accountable for the North American employment relations strategy, including developing and maintaining appropriate employment opportunities for Waterloo students and graduates. In partnership with our Student & Faculty Relations and Communications & Marketing teams, the Director is accountable for identifying strategic employment goals, creating and executing marketing strategies, to develop and maintain appropriate employment opportunities for co-op students and graduates; identifying and delivering services to employers; and ensuring appropriate support of co-op students. The Director plays an active role in managing relations with these employers, and in the development of diverse approaches to relationship management.

The Director, Employment Relations, leads, develops and supports regional teams of staff, working remotely from home offices across Canada. These teams develop new employer hiring relationships as well as retaining and growing existing employer relationships, while ensuring appropriate support for students on and between work terms. The Employment Relations team provides employment support and services for the majority of Waterloo students seeking co-op employment with employers other than for on-campus and international employment.

Our ideal candidate will be a strategic leader who has the capacity to motivate and engage a large team to meet and exceed critical goals and objectives. You will bring a clear track record of achievement in relationship-driven sales or service environments coupled with the keen ability to balance long term planning with short-term deliverables in a highly changing and competitive environment. To be successful in this role you will be innovative, collaborative and able to maintain a high degree of urgency.


Education & Experience Required:

  • University degree or equivalent education and extensive experience. Human Resources accreditation is an asset
  • Minimum 10 years of management experience leading high performing teams
  • Management experience within a sales and service environment or within an HR/Recruitment environment would be an asset
  • Proven expertise in developing and successfully implementing strategy including process re-design
  • Ability to adapt skills and experience to a new environment
  • Proven skill in relationship management and achieving results using a collaborative approach
  • Demonstrated success in leading change efforts
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills
  • Demonstrated high level of organization and ability to manage high volumes of activity and change
