Job Summary

The Manager, Employer and Alumni Engagement furthers the University's vision to support students to become career-ready graduates - able to connect their talents, interests, and education to the world of work. The Manager leads the strategic design, development, implementation, and evaluation of student mentorship networks, on-campus recruitment programs, industry and labour market awareness strategies, degree outcomes reporting, collaborative educational partnerships with alumni, employers, and organizations, and tests new models that position UBC alumni and employers more deeply as co-educators and mentors.

The incumbent contributes directly to the University's transformative learning and alumni engagement goals to (1) advance students' career learning, mentorship, and professional development through work and volunteer experiences, increase exposure to industry, and facilitate meaningful engagement with UBC alumni and to (2) deepen the engagement of UBC alumni, such that students and the University benefit from their perspectives, skills, and voices.

The incumbent leads the overall strategy for (1) volunteer and employment opportunities coordinated through the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers (CSI&C) for undergraduate and graduate students and alumni; (2) internal and external employer relationships; (3) student mentorship and strategic connections between students and industry professionals (4) the implementation and strategic deployment of the CSI&C's and alumni UBC's CRM technology, and; (5) liaises with units and programs within the university to promote co-operative and collaborative communication with external employers and organizations.

Work Performed

  1. Provides campus-wide strategic leadership to employer and alumni engagement to increase student connection with employers, alumni, and organizations within British Columbia, Canada, and internationally.

    1. Works in close partnership with the Director, CSI&C and the Director, Operations & Planning, to develop a comprehensive employer and student-alumni engagement strategy, which includes curricular and co-curricular programs and services.

    2. Responsible for the strategic direction, operations, student learning outcomes, financial management, and overall management of the employer and alumni engagement programming.

    3. Oversees and participates in the development of relationships with potential employers through company site visits, needs assessments, developing campus-wide programs and events, linking employers to campus programs, services, people, and partners, providing strategic targeted recruitment planning and acting as a resource for all on-campus recruitment activity.

  2. Strategically develops the University’s ability to support UBC alumni to access the student talent pipeline, to support alumni in their roles as employers, entrepreneurs and community leaders.
    1. Develops and implements comprehensive strategies to expand employment opportunities and mentorship networks for students and graduates in local, national and international markets.
    2. Liaises with services and programs within the university to promote co-operative and collaborative communication with external employers and coordinates initiatives to enhance external employer experiences with the University. This may include communities of practice, systems upgrades, or environmental scans of existing programs, events and/or services.
    3. Oversees the strategic design and development of revenue generating projects and initiatives, including career fairs, recruitment activities, and employer and industry engagement programs.
    4. Works collaboratively with the Director and the unit leadership team to foster a comprehensive and integrated approach to career development, with particular attention to the roles of employers and alumni in outstanding career development.
    5. Develops employer programming to address the needs of diverse audiences, ensuring comprehensive reflective practices are embedded into programs, services and student roles to maximize student learning and career development outcomes across the unit’s work.
  3. Provides leadership and supervision to a team of professional staff, student staff, interns, and volunteers.
    1. Directs, guides, and coaches staff to achieve departmental goals and outcomes.
    2. Sets objectives, manages outcomes, and determines resources.
    3. Manages professional development planning.
    4. Develops, facilitates, and evaluates training programs for staff, volunteers, and students.
    5. Recruits, hires, evaluates performance and terminates, if required.
  4. Contributes to the alumni UBC strategic plan through broad consideration of alumni involvement across all of Student Development & Services departments, programs, and services.
    1. Develops and oversees strategic initiatives to increase student awareness of alumni UBC before graduation.
    2. Works collaboratively across alumni UBC and Faculties to consider broadly the ways in which alumni are engaged across all programs, events, services and experiences within Student Development & Services, in order to develop a strategic plan for student-alumni engagement, strengthening these connections to enhance career learning and employment outcomes for students.
  5. Strategic Planning, Evaluation and Campus Engagement.
    1. Builds and sustains research and evidence-based knowledge and understanding to inform and evaluate the University’s approaches to employer and alumni engagement, including: student learning outcomes, graduate employment outcomes, employer metrics and feedback, evidence of student preparedness, labour market and industry trends, work integrated learning outcomes, relevant legislation, and work experiences of UBC students and alumni.
    2. Develops and oversees outcomes assessment and program evaluation to measure the impact of programs and services in terms of student learning, career outcomes, and services to departments and Faculties.
    3. Cultivates, builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders including University departments and faculties; Department Heads and Associate Deans, community professionals & community groups, employers, students, and alumni.
    4. Works with the Directors and leadership team in the development and assessment of the strategic goals of the unit.
    5. Manages operational budgets and allocates resources in accordance with strategic priorities to meet the unit’s objectives.
    6. Manages, sets goals, and evaluates all programs and services in consideration of the Vice President Students (VPS) Student Experience Framework and the VPS service standards: respectful, accurate, and responsive.
    7. Acts as a designate for the Director, Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, as required.
    8. Participates on University and departmental committees.
    9. In collaboration with Student Communication Services and the CSI&C’s leadership group, provides strategic content direction for the Build My Career website, CareersOnline CRM, and communications campaigns.
  6. CRM Administration, Management and Strategy
    1. Oversees the CSI&C’s customer relationship management (CRM) strategy and software platform(s) to manage campus job postings, mentorship programs, and steward employer relationships.
    2. Collects, researches, prioritizes and implements ideas, best practices, and recommendations for upgrades and enhancements to web-based point of contact systems.
    3. Leverages technology to establish and sustain partnerships.
    4. Represents the CSI&C on various committees and/or tables convening around CRM technologies and systems that are coordinated through UBC IT.
    5. Acts as the liaison between the CSI&C and the CRM provider to ensure system is serving the business and operational needs of the unit and the University.
    6. Liaises with other campus colleagues in career centres and cooperative education offices utilizing Symplicity and/or other CRM platforms to initiate dialogue in best practices for employer and alumni engagement and technological platforms.
  7. Carries out any other related duties as necessary in keeping with the requirements and qualifications of the job.
