CAFCE President's Message - December 2016

posted on December 23, 2016

Dear CAFCE Members,

As we approach the end of another year, it’s a pleasure to provide an update on behalf of the CAFCE board. It was fantastic to see so many CAFCE members at the November 2nd AGM at the University of Waterloo. On that day, we voted to adopt a new definition of co-operative education which reflects our current best practices and CAFCE’s commitment to inclusivity. You can find the updated definition in our by-laws on the CAFCE website.

Since the AGM, the new board has been quite busy working on a number of initiatives. I’ve provided brief summaries of some of our work below. I’m happy to answer any questions that you might have about any specific initiative.

Student Work Integrated Learning Program (SWILP) – As you may know, the 2016 Federal Budget allocated $73 million over four years for increases in co-operative placements and work integrated learning opportunities. This funding is being distributed by Economic and Social Development Canada (ESDC) through a program known as the Student Work Integrated Learning Program (SWILP). CAFCE board members have continued to connect with ESDC and to advocate for the role that CAFCE can in the development and operationalization of SWILP.

Phoenix Pay Issues – Following conversations with Public Services and Procurement Canada, CAFCE received commitment that outstanding pay issues for co-op students will be prioritized and resolved as quickly as possible. If you have any questions about the process for resolving student pay issues, please contact

Stats Database – We are excited to announce that the CAFCE National Statistics Database is complete and ready for use. We have been hard at work uploading all member institutions and institutional admin contacts into the database and these admins will receive notifications on how to log in early in 2017. If you haven’t yet sent your institutional admin contact to CAFCE, please do so ( The invitation to submit Fall 2016 program data will be sent out in early January with a deadline of February 24, 2017. User documentation and a step-by-step guide on using the database will be included in this messaging. We thank all institutions who continue to support this project and look forward to the value that it will bring to CAFCE and its members.

Expanding our mandate – During the in person meetings in November, the CAFCE board voted unanimously to take immediate action to explore expanding our mandate to include other forms of work integrated learning. The first step in this process involves the establishment of working groups which will be formalized early in the New Year. If you are interested in learning more or getting involved, please feel free to contact me.

Accreditation The Accreditation Council has been hard at work developing a new application for programs of 2 years or less. This is based on the new criteria to accreditation that was adopted at the 2015 Annual General Meeting in Lethbridge. The council is anticipating that this new application will be completed by spring 2017. We thank the CAFCE membership for supporting this change in criteria and look forward to expanding CAFCE’s accreditation.

Last but not least, I’d like to thank the board for sharing their time and expertise in the advancement of co-operative education. It is a pleasure working with and learning from each and every one of you.

With best wishes for a relaxing holiday break and a wonderful start to 2017,

Anne-Marie Fannon

20th WACE World Conference
The Thailand-WACE Organizing Committee for the 20th World Conference June 5-8, 2017 is pleased to announce the Call for Abstracts. The 20th World Conference will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand and hosted through the alliance of TACE and our four Global Partners in Thailand: Suranaree University of Technology, Siam University, Sripatum University and Western Digital, Thailand.
