SWPP Program:

The Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) is an initiative to increase the job-readiness of students registered in STEM, healthcare, business and all other programs at Canadian post-secondary institutions.

The program gives employers the freedom to:

  • Gain access to funds to hire students
  • Leverage a pool of workers eager to enhance their skills
  • Develop new talent for future recruitment needs

Who Qualifies:

Wage subsidies are available to all employers and post-secondary institutions who are creating a work-integrated learning opportunity and who meet the program criteria. Biotech or healthcare employers can hire Canadian students from any post-secondary institutions across Canada through BioTalent Canada’s Student Work Placement Program.

To qualify for the program, either:

  1. the position needs to have a biotechnology or healthcare focus or
  2. the employer needs to have a biotechnology or healthcare focus.

Wage Subsidies:

The program’s wage subsidies help knock down that cost barrier, by covering the cost of a student’s salary by 75% up to a maximum of $7,500.

How to apply:

Contact Colleen Hayes at chayes@biotalent.ca for program updates and information on how to apply to BioTalent Canada’s Student Wage Subsidy Program.

CEWIL Coffee Chat - July 20, 2020

Recently, ESDC approached Magnet and BioTalent Canada to take on a new and specific SWPP program geared specifically to Canadian Healthcare providers since there is currently is no national sectoral association for Canadian healthcare. These new SWPP agreements for healthcare sectors are separate from the other SWPP funding and they are looking for ways to promote the new programs and the best means to inform Canada’s post-secondary about not only the new enhancements, but also on the advent of the new healthcare focus for SWPP. BioTalent Canada and Magnet joined CEWIL members and guests for a 30 minute "coffee chat" on Monday July 20th and had an informative discussion on this new focus for the SWPP program.

The slide show that accompanied this discussion can be found here.
